Ground Radars for Perimeter Surveillance and Cueing
Ground-based radar can be a high-value layer in perimeter security because it reliably detects intruders approaching or crossing your boundary — especially in conditions where cameras or PIR motion sensors struggle (darkness, fog, rain, snow, shadows) and without requiring a direct visual line-of-sight. Key strengths for perimeter use:
1. All-weather, all-lighting detection – works 24/7.
2. Longer reach than PIR or lidar alone – up to hundreds of meters, even with modest hardware.
- 3. Wide field coverage – many units scan 360°.
- 4. Reduces number of other sensors needed (e.g., replacing multiple cameras).
- 5. Integrates with cameras for confirmation, tracking, and recording (via slew-to-cue).
- A multi-sensor strategy is far more effective than any one sensor type. Here’s how inexpensive radars contribute:
1. Early warning detection: Radars excel at detecting motion before other sensors and can trigger other sensors for advanced correlation. They can also trigger other sensors to include optical systems to pan/tilt/zoom to areas of detection and also start/stop recordings.
2. Environmental robustness: Where passive infrared and simple thermal/night vision cameras fail (cold nights, rain, fog, moving shadows), radar cuts through and can see motion with track meta data.
3. Integration with other sensors: Radars that support interoperable cueing standards (i.e., ONVIF, MQTT, etc) can quickly fuse with (but not limited to) cameras, PIR motion detectors, seismic, and fence/ground sensors.
SUMMARY: Ground radars add enhanced detection and coordination in that they can detect threats where cameras struggle and provide range, tracks, and speed/direction of travel to automate alerts and cueing with affordable options.
